The thirteenth largest island in the world, Java is at the heart of Indonesian life. Over half the total population of Indonesia resides on Java, about 141 million people making Java the most populated island in the world. The island has been at the center of Indonesia politically and economically for centuries, and contains four of Indonesia’s eight UNESCO World Heritages sites. (Links below.) Born almost entirely of volcanoes and enjoying a tropical rainforest climate, Java is a place of tremendous natural beauty.

  • Basic information, quote: Java is an island of Indonesia, bordered by the Indian Ocean on the south and the Java Sea on the north. With a population of over 141 million (Java only) or 145 million (including the inhabitants of its surrounding islands), Java is the home to 56.7 percent of the Indonesian population and is the world’s most populous island.   • The Indonesian capital city, Jakarta, is located on Java’s northwestern shore.
  • The core of Indonesian history took place on Java including the powerful Hindu-Buddhist empires, the Islamic sultanates, and the colonial Dutch East Indies.
  • Four of Indonesia’s eight UNESCO World Heritage Sites are located on Java. They are: Ujung Kulon National ParkBorobudur TemplePrambanan Temple, and Sangiran Early Man Site.
  • Java dominates Indonesia economically, politically and culturally.
  • Java is the 13th largest island in the world.

  1. Great pictures. Island living always intrigued me. But now with sea levels raising, not so much. But I have visited. You do not realize how small you are and how big the oceans are,, until you stand on the beech and look out. All you can see is ocean touching the sky. Really awe inspiring!

  2. Love the beautiful pictures! I enjoyed watching the videos and learning ore about Java. I would live to go and see the temples especially Prambana Temple besides going to the national park and seeing the waterfalls.
