Rocks and Baby Steps

Rocks and Baby Steps

The other day, I was in my garden and feeling very frustrated about how l wasn’t getting the rock path completed on the northwest island. This is the last island of the yard to landscape and I’m about 3/4 done. I only have a handful of plants to put in the ground. One of the plants is an apricot tree that’s been in a pot way too long and I’m not sure it’s going to make it, but I’ll give it a shot anyway.

With that said, I divided the island in half because I want a walk-thru. I know myself well enough that I would be too frustrated to have to go ‘all the way around’ to get to my tools. I’m sure some of you can relate. So, for that path, I wanted to use the rocks that I’ve dug out of my difficult, rocky soil. It’s become a mission of mine to showcase them since they’ve been so hard won!

(The photo to the right is the path in question. This is the ‘after’ shot. Sorry, but I don’t have one of the ‘before’.)

But looking at the half-empty path was really bugging me, yet I couldn’t seem to carve out the time to get the rocks moved from various places in the yard. Finally, one morning, I made the mental decision not to even try to find a chunk of time. Instead, first thing each day, I would fill a small plastic container with rocks, carry it to the path then spread them around. Once I began this process, I started to relax. I was now well on my way to filling the path in, little by little. I know by long-habit that baby steps can get just about any job done.

It’s been about two weeks now of this small, daily effort and sure enough the path is really starting to improve. I think the art of breaking a big chore into smaller bite-size pieces is an important lesson to learn. Or in my case, to re-learn repeatedly, lol!

And now, here are the photos of several of my rock paths and other rock arrangements!

This is the same picture as the one above. Just thought you might like to see it bigger! I won’t be able to complete this path until I have the rest of the plants in the ground. You can see dirt on both sides. These are empty spots just waiting for me to get with it!

Rocks and Baby Steps

This rock path is part of the central south island. The dirt patch toward the top needs some repair. What I’d done was build up the dirt to trap the drip water at the base of what is the Indian Laurel tree. Because it’s a depression, any extra water flowed into the path, but I wanted to hold it near the tree. I still haven’t covered up the small dirt berm with rocks, yet. Like any garden, there are always a multitude of tasks that need to be done!

Rocks and Baby Steps

This is the rock path on the north central island. This one is fairly well-maintained. Whenever I find a loose, nearby rock, I toss it onto the path.

Rocks and Baby Steps

This is the butterfly bush to the right of the five Italian Cypresses. In front of it, is a mesquite tree that’s growing like mad. The tree will need training and pruning to get it into an upright shape. I placed all these rocks in an arc around the base of the plants. I think it looks great at a distance.  Up close, like this, it needs to be straightened up. I also intend to find a nice ground cover for the stretch of dirt in front of the rocks. In my mind, it will be beautiful. One day. Ah, rocks and baby steps!

Rocks and Baby Steps

This is probably my second-favorite rock arrangement. It’s on the southeast island in front of a beautiful party-plant lantana. This, too, looks wonderful at a distance. But it also looks nicely finished up close as well.

Rocks and Baby Steps

This is my favorite rock path to-date. It’s on the south wall. The prettiest little vine decided to grow in it and I liked it so well I haven’t been able to remove it.
