Horse Beauty

Horse Beauty

I had five horses once: Queenie, Blackie, Star, Brownie and Princess. Okay, so they only existed in my imaginary corral, in my front yard, and I was ten. But they were real to me. I spent hours roping and training them. I rode them all.

At that time, my family lived in a rural part of Orange County, California. It was a very pretty neighborhood of horse properties. Unfortunately, we were only renting at the time but it didn’t stop me from asking my mom if I could have a horse like all the other kids. She very sweetly said she wished we could but we just didn’t have enough land.

Later, I realized this wasn’t true. We could no more have afforded a horse than the man in the moon. Both my parents were finishing up teaching degrees and we were renting that house. Still, I think it was the right thing to say.  It was a lot easier to comprehend than the harder adult truths of no-money-and-temporary-housing.

I’ve heard all girls go through a horse phase. I’m not sure we ever get over it. Horses are simply magnificent creatures.
