Hallstatt is a lakeside village in the Austrian Salzkammergut southeast of Salzburg. I was first drawn to Hallstatt by way of photos of a region in Austria called the Salzkammergut. This is a large area that runs from the city of Salzburg along the Austrian Alps and through three federal states. It’s very beautiful.

But I landed eventually on Hallstatt, which is located on Lake Hallstatt or Hallstatter See. It is a UNESCO world heritage site because an entire era in European history, from the 8th to the 6th centuries BC, was named after it: The Hallstatt culture. In this small village there are 1300 burial sites from this era. The Hallstatt culture from the Iron Age is said to be the beginnings of the Celtic culture. Read more…

This blog had beautiful pictures of Hallstatt. This blog has a short virtual tour of the lake. This video showcases the lake and the village. 

The St. Michael’s Chapel houses a world-famous charnel house, that is, a vault or room where skeletal remains are stored. Many of the skulls have been elaborately painted. It’s believed many of the paintings were created at the end of the 1700s.

  • The population of Hallstatt is less than 1000 residents.
  • Hallstatt exists on the southwestern shore of Hallstatter See.
  • Hallstatt is Austria’s oldest village.
  • Salt is the reason for Hallstatt’s existence and why it has enjoyed an above subsistence-level living for over two millennia. Hallstatt is home to the world’s oldest salt mine.
  • A charnel house is a vault or room where human skeletal remains are stored. The charnel house at Hallstatt dates back to the 12th Century. (Source)

  • Hallstatt is car-free but can be reached by train.
